Frederick Douglass Academy Harlem Samba
The Harlem Samba Brazilian percussion ensemble is a group of students and alumni from the Frederick Douglass Academy, a high performing public school in Harlem. Modeled after the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro, Harlem Samba performs the rhythms of the Brazilian carnival. The group has recently performed at Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and New York City’s Fashion Night Out in Soho. Harlem Samba has been featured on the documentary “Beyond Ipanema”, a film about Brazilian music in the United States. Many of the group’s college-bound members have traveled to Brazil as part of an exchange program with a Brazilian high school.
